LEGO Star Wars 75398 C-3PO will set a new record for a galaxy far, far away when it wanders on to shelves next month.
The first large-scale protocol droid built from traditional System bricks, 75398 C-3PO is a perfectly-scaled counterpart to 75379 R2-D2 (surely prompting many more purchases of that March 2024 release). But those aren’t Threepio’s only claims to fame: according to the set’s instruction manual, he’s also setting a new record for the LEGO Star Wars theme.
75398 C-3PO includes 1,138 pieces, a whopping 475 of which are moulded in pearl gold. That’s the biggest number of gold elements in a single LEGO Star Wars set in the theme’s 25-year history. And achieving that feat meant that the designers had to recolour 34 different elements in pearl gold for the first time, instantly expanding the LEGO Group’s blingiest part palette.
It was all necessary to get a buildable C-3PO that looks this good (and it really does!), and means that the venerable droid joins another recent set with a shiny record to its name. 76191 Infinity Gauntlet holds the crown for the most drum-lacquered gold pieces in a single LEGO set – but it’s on the brink of losing it to 31213 Mona Lisa, which will apparently include even more when it drops in October.
