While I have been impressed with the Ferrari 458 Italia and Porsche 911 GTs within the Speed Champions range, the rest of the line up has been pretty much hit or miss - the McLaren P1 was an absolute horror. In 2016 there have been a few better models, thankfully one of them being the Corvette Z06.
Like most of the Speed Champion sets, this is a 6-stud wide model. It is a fairly straight forward build, with no overly complicated techniques involved. The minifigure, with the officially licensed overalls, is great. I am not a fan of stickers by a long shot, but this model needs them applied or it would look very flat as a finished build. The addition of the film camera as an accessory leaves the builder wondering ‘why?’This set does a fairly decent job of representing the actual car, but I still can’t help thinking that this is just a caricature. The real car is low and slinky – dare I say quite beautiful to look at, having seen one in the metal at the Geneva Motor Show this year – but this one just looks a bit too chunky to capture the Corvette lines.
But this is the problem with the Speed Champions sets – some cars are done very well, and some are just not right. I have to say that the 'vette falls into the latter. It is frustrating for a petrol head like myself as there is massive potential, but ultimately, the rigidity of the brick limits the accuracy at this scale.
