Adding a pup to the LEGO Ideas otter was essential

One of the biggest changes to Maximilian Lambrecht's LEGO Ideas otter design is the addition of a pup, but doing so was essential for the shape.

LEGO Ideas 21366 Floating Sea Otters maintains the core concept of the original project, but changes much of the model's overall appearance in favour of accuracy to the real animal. We went over these differences in a previous report, but the biggest change is that the official design includes a new pup accessory.

Including the additional build was essential for 21366 Floating Sea Otters, and LEGO Ideas Creative Lead Jordan David Scott explained why in a recent roundtable interview.

"One, it's adorable to include that," stated Jordan. "With animals being a big passion point, we've seen with other products, particularly with kids, where we've introduced a parent and younger animal, it's worked really well.

LEGO sets with an infant and adult version of an animal include the recent 31385 Sea Animals: Beautiful Dolphins, 31165 Wild Animals: Panda Family and even LEGO Harry Potter's 76458 Thestral Family. There's a track record of these models, suggesting that the logic of including one in the new Ideas model is sound.

The chance to have the pup lying on his mother's stomach also presented the design team with an opportunity to amend the shape of 21366 Floating Sea Otters.

"I think another reason is also that when you see the sea otter lying down, it's very flat," continued Jordan. "So it was to bring some extra height to the model, because otherwise it is very flat when you just have the base, and most of the sea otter is submerged underwater. We really wanted to bring something on top of it."

LEGO Ideas 21366 Floating Sea Otters measures just 8cm tall with the head, but most of the build without the pup is around half that height, and 30cm wide. That's an inevitably flat build, in accordance with the pitched submerged design. The pup addresses this concern by increasing the overall height of the build without going too far.

There's another aspect of the LEGO Ideas set to consider, which makes sense of the pup's addition, as well. That would be the emotion and recreation of the animal's stereotypical behaviours to increase the overall appeal of the set.

"I think a lot of people recognise the fluffy sea otters from either doing the kind of washing their face expression, or like holding a small pup," added Jordan. "So it was just an idea to add one, and I think it brought a lot more emotion to the set as well."

An infant version of an animal is almost always going to increase the cute factor of a LEGO set, and while the pup certainly increases the piece count of 21366 Floating Sea Otters compared to the original project, its inclusion is justified in terms of accuracy, overall appeal and the model's design.

LEGO Ideas 21366 Floating Sea Otters is available to pre-order now, retailing for £99.99 / $119.99 / €109.99 from March 1, 2026.
