The BrickLink Designer Program may have its first millionaire LEGO designer on its hands, as SleeplessNight’s Adventure in Transylvania inches ever closer to selling a record 50,000 copies.
Adventure in Transylvania is SleeplessNight’s third successful project across the first five series of the BrickLink Designer Program, following Series 1’s Mountain Fortress and Series 4’s Siege Encampment. Both of those sets sold out their total allocations of 30,000 sets apiece, while his latest has enjoyed an increased capacity of 50,000 sets as the LEGO Group tries to better meet demand for these fan-designed models.
As of 11:30am BST on June 13, Adventure in Transylvania has sold 90.244% of those 50,000 copies, or 45,122 sets. And based on the retail price for each of these three models, chances are good that SleeplessNight has now earned in excess of seven figures from his BrickLink Designer Program sets, making him the series’ first millionaire LEGO designer.
All BDP designers receive a 5% cut of net sales of their sets. According to BrickLink (via Jay’s Brick Blog), that figure is calculated based on gross sales minus tax (in countries where it’s included in the price, such as VAT in the UK) and shipping. Let’s do a little maths to see how that shakes out on the three sets SleeplessNight has designed so far…
| BDP set | RRP (rounded) | Units sold | Gross sales | 5% of gross |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mountain Fortress | £300 | 30,000 | £9 million | £450,000 |
| Siege Encampment | £200 | 30,000 | £6 million | £300,000 |
| Adventure in Transylvania | £300 | 45,122 | £13,536,600 | £676,830 |
Altogether, that’s a total gross of roughly £1,426,830 for SleeplessNight. Even when subtracting taxes and shipping, it seems likely that the final figure will still come in somewhere over £1 million, given VAT in the UK (to give one example) is only 20%, while sales tax is not built into the price at all in the US (one of the LEGO Group’s biggest markets, and surely where a lot of these sets are being sold).
It also seems all but inevitable that Adventure in Transylvania will sell its entire quota at this point, and even if the LEGO Group doesn’t increase production numbers again, that’s still another £73,170 (minus taxes and shipping) in SleeplessNight’s pocket. In essence, the BrickLink Designer Program is proving to be very lucrative for its fan designers, offering big rewards for their talents.

If you fancy getting in on the action yourself, Series 9 will open for submissions in September this year, while Series 10’s intake period begins in January 2026. But it’s worth noting that BrickLink has changed the rules slightly around repeat submissions, so designers can now only be selected once a year (or every three series) – which will make it slightly trickier to reach the same dizzying heights as SleeplessNight, or at least as quickly.
But compared to LEGO Ideas, where fan designers earn only 1% of sales, this is clearly the most profitable way to make the most of your building skills… if you’re lucky enough to make the cut for any given series.
All five sets in Series 5 of the BrickLink Designer Program are still available at the time of writing, with Adventure in Transylvania and Popcorn Wagon closest to selling out.
