Brisbane Airport recruits LEGO artist

Brisbane Airport has recruited builder Ben Craig to be produce two new walls of LEGO artwork to be enjoyed by travellers. In June, Brisbane Airport began the search for a LEGO builder to be the new artist-in-residence, and now the Australian destination has selected a suitably talented builder. Airport World reports the news that Ben Craig has been chosen, and will be building walls of art that celebrate passengers' travel experiences (presumably not including the queue for passport control).

Anchoring the displays in each wall will be two large scale works by Craig – one showing a day in the life of Brisbane Airport’s International Terminal (with some quirky characters included) almost two metres in length and the other a detailed model of a new aviation wonder more than a metre in length.

But the airport did not choose LEGO bricks as a medium only to have inspiring displays, Craig will be encouraging the public to gets hands on with the LEGO elements too.

Julieanne Alroe, CEO and managing director of Brisbane Airport Corporation (BAC), revealed that BNE was inundated with interest from LEGO brick artists vying for the position of artist-in-residence.

“The number of applications we had from all over Australia and as far away as India was quite surprising and the way in which people are building art-forms with LEGO bricks is very impressive.

“Ben blew us away with his skill and artistic ability in creating incredibly detailed mosaic pictures and large scale 3D artworks with the bricks.

Craig will be third artist-in-residence at Brisbane Airport, starting the hands-on build workshops from September 15.
