Comparing LEGO Star Wars K-2SO sets nearly 10 years later

A new LEGO Star Wars K-2SO set is bursting onto the scene nearly 10 years after the initial droid figure, embracing a multitude of differences.

75434 K-2SO has been officially revealed at Star Wars Celebration and will launch later this year, almost 10 years after the first buildable K-2SO figure – 75120 K-2SO.

With 3,226 days and 676 pieces different between them, the two models don't have much in common. Both builds have varying levels of accuracy, detail and quality. Ahead of the new set's release later this year, we're comparing the two creations to see just how much has changed in eight years and 10 months.

Heads

Unlike the 2016 constraction figure, 75434 K-2SO has an entirely brick-built head, from the eyes to the rounded head. While there are some impressive techniques on show, they can't hope to measure up to the accuracy of 75120 K-2SO's unique head element. The solid white eyes are especially more appealing in the 2016 set.

The 2016 piece is always going to be the more accurate option, and the two heads seem to be of a similar size. This presents those who collect with an opportunity to combine the two and create the ultimate LEGO K-2SO sculpture, as the newer set is much more accurate otherwise.

Shoulders

Since the 2016 figure is based on Rogue One, when K-2SO had defected and seen some wear and tear, the printed Empire emblem on its shoulder is suitably worn as intended and sits on a singular rounded shoulder plate piece.

The 2025 set upgrades this shoulder with a more accurate and angular design, with a fresh emblem to bo,ot since this set is likely inspired by Andor when K-2SO was newer.

Torsos

The difference between the torsos in the two set is stark. While the 2016 version worked with existing Technic and constraction pieces to capture the intricate shaping and detailing of K-2SO to the best of its ability, the LEGO Star Wars designers have been allowed to stretch their creative muscles in the 2025 model.

The shift to a System sculpture does limit the posing options for the new K-2SO figure compared to the 2016 set, but it makes up for it in accurate details that show no exposed Technic axles. It keeps the look of K-2SO as clean as possible, and positions the decorated elements correctly to boot.

Limbs

Comparing the feet and arms between the two LEGO versions of K-2SO also reveals the limits of the constraction system. Since the action figure building system relied on singular parts and Technic compatibility, the arms and feet tend to use existing pieces.

While acceptable for a lower-cost set, they're nothing compared to that of 75434 K-2SO, which mixes Technic elements with System pieces to include more decorated details, layered builds and a wider variety of elements that make up a much more accurate design. That accuracy comes at an increased price, but also an increased size.

Upgrades

There are some things that, due to the price and budget, 75434 K-2SO has that 75120 K-2SO simply could not. These include a display stand, almost certainly removing any kind of posing from the legs, a smaller K-2SO figure, and an Ultimate Collector Series-style plaque.

These are undoubtedly upgrades over the 2016 K-2SO, but that small figure is just one example of how some things never change. The 2025 K-2SO is identical to the 2016 design. Despite the LEGO Group having the opportunity to improve on the design as they did with the Super Battle Droid recently, K-2SO's minuscule figure remains unchanged and as perfect as ever.

LEGO Star Wars 75434 K-2SO is available to pre-order now and will ship from August 1, retailing for £79.99 / $89.99 / €89.99 and including 845 pieces. May the 4th is fast approaching and the LEGO Group has plenty planned for Star Wars fans. You can find out more on our dedicated page.
