How not to display the $1,000 LEGO Star Wars Death Star

How not to display the $1,000 LEGO Star Wars Death Star

There’s really only one way to display the new LEGO Star Wars 75419 Death Star, and it isn’t as a footstool, spice rack or coffee table. But we’ve given it a go anyway…

Let’s pretend for a moment that you’ve forked out $1,000 for the new LEGO Death Star, spent 20-plus hours putting it together and are now trying to figure out how and where to display it in your home. Sure, it’s deliberately only 27cm deep, so you don’t need the kind of space required by 75159 Death Star. But it’s also stupidly tall and wide, so you’re still going to need quite a lot of room.

And if you don’t have the shelf space required? Well, we’ve got a few alternative suggestions for how you could show off your latest acquisition. Although you’re probably better off not trying these at home if you don’t want to risk a 9,000-piece disaster when your Death Star falls off the kitchen counter. Stick with us, we’ll explain as we show you how not to display 75419 Death Star

As a coffee table

Some people build coffee tables to house their LEGO Star Wars UCS sets (the Falcon, mainly). 75419 Death Star isn’t quite the right shape for that, but what if you just used the set as the coffee table? This one works quite nicely if you ask us. Dimitri – who has his hands on our review copy and was brave enough to try out these alternate display options for us – certainly seems pretty happy with it.

As a TV

Have a quick glance around the living room and ask yourself: what shelf could conceivably accommodate the width, height and weight of the UCS Death Star? And then realise the answer is obviously the TV unit. One quick swap later and rather than zoning out in front of the idiot box, you can spend your evenings admiring your £900 purchase. It’s probably more expensive than your TV anyway…

As a footstool

We’re nothing if not practical at Brick Fanatics, so why not test out the structural stability of 75419 Death Star by using it as a footstool? Sit back, feet up, pop something good on the telly and enjoy. (Heel cushion sold separately.)

As a spice rack

Variety is the spice of life, the Death Star is a pretty spicy weapon, you see where we’re going with this, it’s the Death Spice Rack. If you don’t mind getting a bit of turmeric in your trash compactor or mustard seeds in your meditation chamber, the Death Star makes for a pretty nifty kitchen ornament.

As a bookshelf

If you’re looking for something slightly more practical and slightly less crumbly to store on your Death Star, you can’t go wrong with a few books. Dimitri’s picked out some pretty relevant ones here, but the literary world is your oyster.

As a coat rack

Pop your Death Star in the hallway and you’ve got a readymade but very expensive coat rack. The downside of this one of course, if there can be a downside to a Death Star coat rack, is that your jacket is going to cover up all of those nice interior details. But that’s what a sizeable contingent of the LEGO Star Wars community wanted from a fully-enclosed Death Star anyway…

As a shoe rack

Should you put your shoes on a $1,000 LEGO Death Star? No. Did Dimitri try it anyway? Yes. In the interests of science, obvs. To be fair, this does highlight just how spacious the Death Star’s hangar and throne room are. You’re welcome, LEGO Star Wars team.

As a headboard

Headboards for beds come in all sorts of formats, but precious few are made of solid ABS. In fact, we’d go as far as saying that nobody has ever tried creating one out of hard plastic before. Dimitri’s a kind of pioneer in that regard, boldly going where nobody has gone before. And presumably getting a really sore back of his head in the process.

Any way other than front-on

PSA: the Death Star does not look the business from the side or the back. That is all.

Bonus: as a minifigure display

Okay, this one might actually work. 75419 Death Star looks pretty cavernous without its included 38 minifigures, but dig out as many as you can find and pop them into every nook and cranny and it starts to look… even better? Maybe? The Death Star backdrop is analogous with Star Wars in general, so it does sort of work as a generic display. Even if it is a $1,000 display.

75419 Death Star debuts October 1 for LEGO Insiders for £899.99 / $999.99 / €999.99. Hit the links to check out our written and video reviews.
