LEGO 10355 Blacktron Renegade is designed for fans of all ages

The upcoming LEGO Icons 10355 Blacktron Renegade isn't just for nostalgic Classic Space fans – the build has been designed for all ages.

Despite the 18+ recommended age rating attached to 10355 Blacktron Renegade, the set's designer Jae Won Lee has detailed that Classic Space enthusiasts aren't the only ones who will be able to enjoy the model when it launches next month.

Releasing on January 1 for LEGO Insiders for £89.99 / $99.99 / €99.99, 10355 Blacktron Renegade is made up of modular sections similar to the original build – 6954 Renegade – and it combines that old function with the Build Together concept that was introduced in 2021 to invite fans of all ages to build the set.

"I feel like it's very good for families because the kids can build one part and the parents make up the frames and after that, the family get together and combine it all." shared Jae Won Lee to Tiago Catarino.

To help with these play features, the colour scheme of the original LEGO set was modified to ensure a clear experience for everyone without drastically changing the uniform design of the old Classic Space model.

"It's all black and yellow so it's very hard to show people how to play with the set the right way because the LEGO Group always considers methods of play and how to play with a set's colours," explained Jae Won Lee to Zusammengebaut.

"The inside structures use different colours, it's just on the outside and exterior that it's black and I wanted to put some more red on it even though the original Blacktron Renegade is black and yellow only. The red acts as colour spot points to help with play."

By featuring the red elements mostly in places where a play feature or modular connectivity is located, it encourages enthusiasts to interact with those parts of the build and makes it easier for younger fans to spot the functions too. Combining play and display in a nostalgia-focused model not only makes the new set similar to the original build but may bring in a younger generation of Classic Space fans too. Incorporating such functions doesn't interfere with the design of 10355 Blacktron Renegade either. 10355 Blacktron Renegade will be available to buy for LEGO Insiders from January 1 for £89.99 / $99.99 / €99.99 and for everyone else from January 4.
