LEGO Icons 10355 Blacktron Renegade is made up of several modular sections that can be rearranged, much like the original 1987 set. These modular sections use clips similar to 40580 Blacktron Cruiser but the designer behind the nostalgic 2025 model has explained that the two are incompatible and why. We previously expected the two sets to be able to connect to one another but this won't be the case next year.
"We redesigned the connections so it's easy to switch back and forth to make new ships," shared designer Jae Won Lee speaking to Tiago Catarino. "This connection is different from the ones we had in 40580 Blacktron Cruiser because we need a stronger connection for the new set. It's a little bit heavier and we need more stability so we changed the connection a little bit."
The difference between the clip connections in 40580 Blacktron Cruiser and 10355 Blacktron Renegade consists of there being clips on both modules rather than just one, meaning that aside from a single module from 40580 Blacktron Cruiser, you won't be able to combine the two builds next year.
It's an unfortunate outcome but given the size of some modules in 10355 Blacktron Renegade compared to those of 40580 Blacktron Cruiser, a stronger connection may be more necessary than you'd think. Despite their incompatibility, the two sets will undoubtedly still look great next to one another.
