Like BrickHeadz and Monsters, Inc.? Then this LEGO set delivers

The first Monsters, Inc. LEGO set is small, simple and cute, and will appeal to anyone who likes Monsters, Inc., BrickHeadz, or both.

LEGO BrickHeadz 40861 Sulley, Mike and Boo Figures finally gives Monsters, Inc. the LEGO treatment, and while these BrickHeadz builds don’t exactly offer up something innovative or unique, sometimes there are benefits to a LEGO set that slots nicely into an existing collection rather than demanding to be the centre of attention on a shelf.

Do you like BrickHeadz and/or Monsters, Inc.? If so, this might be the LEGO set for you.

Pixar’s premiere monster power couple Mike Wazowksi and James P. Sullivan haven’t been blessed with the same kind of LEGO ubiquity over the years as other notable characters from films such as Toy Story and Cars. WALL-E, Up, Inside Out and Brave are all better represented in LEGO form than the humble workers at Monsters Incorporated, no matter how close they are to beating the All-time Scare Record.

Until now, Mike and Sulley have been left waiting on the shelf, alongside the disembodied dad legs from Onward and Flik from Antz A Bug’s Life. (At least Flik got to make a cameo in the LEGO The Incredibles video game.)

Finally, Monsters, Inc. has been given a turn at the LEGO table, and if getting a cute, blocky version of these characters is all that you care about, this set delivers exactly what you need. If you’re a fan of BrickHeadz, all the better.

There’s not much by way of innovation or experimentation here – Mike, Sulley and their temporarily adopted human child Boo click together in much the same way as any other BrickHeadz set. First comes a cuboid with SNOT pieces on the sides, then layers of plates and tiles create abstract details to set these aside from other licensed characters. Sulley’s horns are fun and Mike’s one big eye is spot on, but otherwise these three builds don’t deviate from the established formula.

LEGO BrickHeadz 40861 Sully Mike and Boo Figures review 02 1200x800

This is far from a negative – the whole point of BrickHeadz is that uniformity. 40861 Sulley, Mike and Boo Figures will sit perfectly next to any other BrickHeadz set you may own and will round out the collection nicely. Some LEGO sets are soloists and some make up part of the choir; the fact that these figures blend into the mix rather than drawing attention is a selling point rather than a drawback for ardent BrickHeadz enthusiasts.

Even the price of this set is entirely within the expected range for a BrickHeadz set with three characters. It's possible to quibble over whether two shorter figures and one slightly taller figure balance out when compared to similar sets of this size, but ultimately, this slots neatly into the LEGO Group's current BrickHeadz portfolio without ruffling a single price-related feather.

Alternatively, if you’re a Monsters, Inc. fan who has never really paid much attention to BrickHeadz before, there are far worse places to start. These little figures deliver a nice little furry punch of recognisable licensed fun without breaking the bank, and while it might be nice to eventually get a LEGO set with a bit more distinct Monsters, Inc. flavour, it’s hard to fault what has been offered up here.

Just be warned: the whole point of BrickHeadz is that they’re dangerously collectable, and there are plenty of other Pixar BrickHeadz sets that would sit very nicely next to this adorable monster family.
