The fifth series of the LEGO BrickLink Designer Program has seen one specific set draw incredibly high prices on the online aftermarket.
The Series 5 LEGO BrickLink Designer Program sets have been shipped out and are starting to arrive at buyers' doorsteps, but some crowdfunders are taking their copies straight to the online aftermarket. The five sets in the series include Adventure in Transylvania, Antique Shop, Mushroom Village, Popcorn Wagon and The Thieves of Tortuga.
All five of these models have quickly appeared on online aftermarkets, such as eBay, now that the boxes are being received by the crowdfunders, but one is fetching much higher prices than the rest. A quick look at the completed LEGO BrickLink Designer Program Series 5 listings on eBay in the US reveals that Adventure in Transylvania is fetching far higher prices than the rest of the series' sets.
The model is going for an average of $500, but some listings reach as high as $650. The gothic build was originally sold for $349.99 in the limited-edition Series 5 run. Notably, Series 5 was the first time that the BrickLink team trialled a dynamic stock system, expanding the usual 30,000 set limit to 50,000 copies with some models, including Adventure in Transylvania.
It's not uncommon for LEGO BrickLink Designer Program sets to do well on the aftermarket, even in the pre-order phase, but this is our first look at whether or not the BrickLink team's experiments to increase capacity based on the significant demand for castle models will have any effect on their aftermarket value.
The BrickLink Designer Program Series 6's sales, while lower than other series, were the first time in which no single set sold out before the end of crowdfunding. This means that everyone had the chance to purchase all five of the models during the crowdfunding window, rather than one or two selling out within days or hours.
