LEGO celebrates 66 years of the LEGO brick patent

It's been 66 years since the patent for the iconic LEGO brick was signed as the LEGO Group celebrates another year of the plastic piece.

The original patent for the classic LEGO element was signed 66 years ago today, on January 28, 1958. Note that this isn't the date that the company was founded, which was 1932 and that LEGO pieces have been on sale since 1949.

Unlike the LEGO Group's massive plans for the 90th anniversary in 2022, don't expect any major celebrations for this monumental moment. That said, the LEGO Group have released a celebratory video that appears to be new but can be used in future years as it doesn't mention a specific anniversary.

It's a fun way to commemorate today but it's not the only anniversary the LEGO Group can celebrate this year and it's not quite the most important one either. LEGO Star Wars is turning 25 in 2024 and two new sets have been revealed for the event including two one-of-a-kind minifigures. More are rumoured, but those should be taken with caution.

LEGO Monkie Kid is celebrating an anniversary this year too, tying in with its cultural inspiration, through a wave of sets including the massive 80054 Megapolis City 5th Anniversary. A LEGO Star Wars polybag is also celebrating another anniversary but on a smaller scale.
