The LEGO Group has scooped two gongs in the Toy Foundation’s Toy of the Year awards, which are regarded as the toy industry’s equivalent to the Oscars.
Regular frontrunners in the annual Toy of the Year awards, the LEGO Group picked up another slate of nominations in this year’s event, and ultimately came away with two prizes: 72046 Game Boy won Kidult Toy of the Year, while 76968 Dinosaur Fossils: Tyrannosaurus rex claimed Construction Toy of the Year. This year’s big winner was Spin Master’s Primal Hatch, which took home Toy of the Year and allows kids to raise their own Jurassic World T. rex from an egg. The People’s Choice Award went to the Pokémon Trading Card Game’s Mega Evolution Elite Trainer Box. The awards were announced at a gala that raised more than $1 million for the Toy Foundation, which brings play to children in need around the world.

“The TOTY Awards celebration is a powerful reminder of the impact play has in children’s lives,” said Pamela Mastrota, Executive Director of The Toy Foundation. “Congratulations to this year’s winners and finalists for raising the bar on what it means to deliver meaningful, imaginative play experiences, and to the toy community for collectively raising more than $1m to support The Toy Foundation’s mission. We are proud to channel the industry’s incredible passion for play into creating a momentous impact on children in need.”
Recent additions to the LEGO Group’s awards cabinet include two prizes at the annual Hero Toy Awards at London Toy Fair, where 11501 Tulip Bouquet and 21589 Mini Biomes took home honours in the construction toys category.
