LEGO Art Claude Monet's Water Lilies presented 'key design challenge'

LEGO Art's new 31220 Claude Monet – Bridge over a Pond of Water Lilies recreates the iconic artwork, which presented a key design challenge.

The LEGO Group has lifted the curtain on 31220 Claude Monet – Bridge over a Pond of Water Lilies, releasing on March 1, 2026, for £179.99 / $249.99 / €199.99 with 3,179 elements. This latest recreation of a real work of art has been carefully designed to capture the unique style of the painting, and it's well worth comparing the two side-by-side.

Bridge over a Pond of Water Lilies is part of a series of more than 250 paintings done by Claude Monet, but the bridge scene is one of the most iconic. This particular artwork was painted in 1899.

When you look at 31220 Claude Monet – Bridge over a Pond of Water Lilies next to the artwork on which the set is based, you can start to fully appreciate the part usage and techniques that replicate the different brush strokes and colour choices. The numerous bar elements, for instance, have been used to capture the vertical strokes used throughout the painting.

“Translating Monet’s brushstrokes into LEGO bricks was a key design challenge,” says Stijn Oom, LEGO Designer. “The team meticulously created a tactile 3D surface by layering tiles and plates in both vertical and horizontal directions, mimicking the brushwork and carefully adapting Monet's subtle palette of hues within LEGO’s signature colour options."

This is just like how the real work of art uses layers to depict the scene in the impressionist style. Some of the canvases in this collection are reported to have up to 15 layers of paint. While that wouldn't be anywhere near as thick as the official LEGO model and the plastic pieces used, it goes to show just how similar the techniques between the two are.

The abstract nature of the impressionist style is also something that was carefully replicated in the model, while taking care to preserve what makes the painting iconic.

"Reimagining the nuance of the original work in LEGO bricks required certain elements of the work to be abstracted, all while preserving essential details of the composition to evoke Monet’s signature artistic style," continues Stijn.

This is partially visible through the inventive part usage in 31220 Claude Monet – Bridge over a Pond of Water Lilies, such as the mix of frogs, carrots, and katanas to best recreate certain aspects of the painting. They're all used in a more abstract way than for the purpose they were originally designed.

LEGO Art's new 31220 Claude Monet – Bridge over a Pond of Water Lilies will be released on March 1, 2026, for £179.99 / $249.99 / €199.99. LEGO Insiders receive early access on March 1, while the wide release is planned for March 4.
