Former LEGO designer reveals never-before-seen Peter Jackson minifigure

A former LEGO designer has revealed what’s probably the rarest LEGO The Lord of the Rings piece of all time: an exclusive, never-before-seen Peter Jackson minifigure.

Marcos Bessa (who left the LEGO Group earlier this year) shared images of the minifigure to his Instagram story while going through inventory for his BrickLink store. “I’m having a hard time finding this one online,” he wrote. “Is it possible that no-one has known about this figure before?” The former designer added that the minifigure was made ‘as a gift for Peter Jackson himself’, and he was lucky enough to add one to his collection.

The minifigure uses stock dark tan legs and Frodo’s standard hairpiece, but otherwise features exclusive torso and head printing. The front of his torso includes the One Ring on a chain around his neck, while the back features the Hobbit movie logo. Marcos followed up in a later story post on Instagram to clarify that the LEGO Group produced just 20 copies of the minifigure for the company’s first meeting with Lord of the Rings and Hobbit director Peter Jackson.

That would date the minifigure to probably the late 2000s or early 2010s, given the first LEGO The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit sets debuted in 2012. And with only 20 in existence, this minifigure is technically rarer than many of the San Diego Comic-Con exclusive characters that regularly command thousands on the aftermarket.

Marcos teasingly asked his followers how he should price this Peter Jackson minifigure on his BrickLink store, so it may be that this particular example will end up for sale to the right buyer. (By which we mean a buyer with deep pockets.) He’s already got a bunch of other employee-exclusive sets and Comic-Con minifigures up for grabs, but this will likely be the most expensive item available at Bessa Bazaar.

Keep an eye on Marcos’s store for the chance to buy one of just 20 LEGO Peter Jackson minifigures in the near future. This technically isn’t the first LEGO minifigure inspired by the director’s likeness, however: 79008 Pirate Ship Ambush’s Pirate of Umbar is based on Jackson’s cameo in Return of the King. That minifigure is available for around £11 on BrickLink.
