Despite being showcased as a key selling point of LEGO Icons 10356 USS Enterprise NCC-1701-D, its main play feature is a curious addition to the set.
The LEGO Icons theme will welcome an exciting new model later this month, in the long-awaited shape of 10356 USS Enterprise NCC-1701-D. The 3,600-piece LEGO Star Trek build will no doubt delight some fans, although others already have reservations about the set.
One of the model's unique selling points is the ability to detach the large elliptical command saucer from the front of the ship by removing a tiny shuttlepod pin, leaving the rear stardrive section to do its own thing. That option may be welcomed by some long-time fans of Star Trek: The Next Generation, but it’s a feature that was actually rarely used in either the TV series or movies.
In fact, the crew of the Enterprise D only performed that manoeuvre three times during its 176-episode run, including in the show’s pilot episode, 'Encounter at Farpoint,' 'Arsenal of Freedom' in Season 1 and the epic Season 4 premiere, 'The Best of Both Worlds, Part II.' A 12-foot version of the saucer section was filmed for a dramatic crash sequence in 1994’s Star Trek Generations, with the crew having to make an emergency landing on Veridian III, but that was it.
Apart from an occasional wobble while moving the model, 10356 USS Enterprise NCC-1701-D appears to be a fairly sturdy starship, one that must have required some clever design and engineering in order to make the saucer separation work, despite it not necessarily being a feature that some fans would have even known about.
Still, it’s a welcome addition to the LEGO Icons build and will at least give those who purchase 10356 USS Enterprise NCC-1701-D the ability to recreate those handful of scenes or display the set in a variety of different ways.
