This year's big LEGO Insiders Weekend gift-with-purchase is fun, novel and functional, but doesn't quite stand out in a year of stellar gifts.

Joining 5009114 Holiday Crafting Set and 40700 Winter Holiday Train for LEGO Insiders Weekend this year is 40699 Retro Record Player with orders above £225 / $250 / €250 during the LEGO Insiders Weekend – November 23 and 24. Unlike most other massive LEGO gifts-with-purchase, 40699 Retro Record Player directly recreates a much larger item only using LEGO elements.

Following in the footsteps of 6471611 Buildable Cassette Player during the LEGO Insiders event, 40699 Retro Record Player brings more to the table both visually and functionally with a handful of printed pieces and some involved features, but it's by no means perfect.

As much as the transparent elements and shaping of 40699 Retro Record Player help it to look great on display, its functionality leaves something to be desired. There are a lot of interactive aspects that you'll find yourself switching and turning a few times, but the main function of the GWP is to spin the record realistically. It works but a proper mechanism to spin it without reaching behind the build would have been a thrilling inclusion.

Despite this, there's no denying that the set looks good on display as a small retro item harkening back to an older era of music. Compared to many of the other gifts-with-purchase from 2024 though, it's lacking and struggles to stand out due to how exceptional this year has been for the bonus builds.
