LEGO The Lord of the Rings: Sméagol & Déagol GWP revealed

The LEGO Group has revealed a future The Lord of the Rings gift-with-purchase that depicts arguably one of the darkest scenes in the entire trilogy.

40761 The Lord of the Rings: Sméagol & Déagol will presumably be handed out to early adopters of the previously-revealed 10354 The Lord of the Rings: The Shire whenever that finally goes on sale, and as a companion piece strikes some of the same chords as the newest Bag End: namely that it includes a pair of hobbits. But where The Shire is all about celebrating birthdays and letting off fireworks, this GWP is more concerned with murder.

Comprising both above ground and underwater sections, the cleverly-composed model recreates the moment Déagol finds the One Ring on a riverbed – and is subsequently strangled to death by Sméagol, who would go on to become known as Gollum. Sure, Tolkien’s story is full of Orcs and giant spiders and wizards falling down chasms, but none of those fantasy tropes are quite so intimately disturbing as watching Sméagol murder his friend in broad daylight.
