LEGO SMART Play minifigures come partially pre-assembled

There's not long left to wait until LEGO SMART Play debuts, and it's been discovered that the platform's minifigures come partially pre-assembled.

LEGO Star Wars will debut SMART Play on March 1 in six countries across eight models. These eight sets feature various SMART tags, bricks and minifigures, including 16 SMART minifigures across them. With the release date coming up fast, the first look at these sets in-person has surfaced online, including views of the SMART minifigures.

Thanks to this preview, it is now confirmed that SMART minifigures come more pre-assembled straight out of the bag than normal minifigures. While standard minifigures are made up of at least a head, torso and leg piece that you put together, SMART minifigures come with their legs and torso pre-attached, with no official way to separate them.

Whether those legs are short or long, you can't remove them from the SMART minifigure's torso without additional tools and damage to the minifigure.

It's an interesting change to the LEGO minifigures we have come to know, but it can be explained by the fact that the torso holds all of the technology for the SMART minifigure. That technology would be easily accessible and possibly fall out if the legs were detachable – an outcome the LEGO Group would likely prefer to avoid.

It's bad news for anyone hoping to customise the SMART minifigures, but the decorations on those elements are fairly specific to their respective characters. This is except for SMART Wicket, which uses a plain brown SMART torso and bendable short legs.

You can experience the SMART minifigures and the new platform for yourself when LEGO Star Wars launches SMART Play on March 1. You'll need the SMART brick in 75421 Darth Vader's TIE Fighter, 75423 Luke’s Red Five X-wing, or 75427 Throne Room Duel & A-wing to use the SMART elements in any of the eight sets.
