LEGO Star Wars 75416 Chopper C1 10P review 2 1024x683

As with the midi-scale ships and helmet collection, the LEGO Star Wars team very much continue the ‘if it ain’t broke don’t fix it’ approach with their droid collection, offering up 75416 Chopper (C1-10P) in much the same way as 75379 R2-D2 last year, with enough specific detail to this particular character to keep things fresh where they matter most.

The framework and approach to putting together Chopper will feel very familiar to anyone who has built the already excellent 75379 R2-D2, based around a small Technic frame as a core, with panels placed on each side, then the legs and head.

Details specific to Chop are there in colour and parts selection as well as functionality, most notably in the fact that the connector built into the central body of the droid to attach the head is loose, in such a way that you may think you’ve built the whole thing wrong.

But you haven’t: it’s a simple but effective idea so as to give Chop that unique animated style he has where he’s able to slightly tilt his head from side to side. The final model has a small widget at the back to wiggle up and down to shift it right to left, and the end result is spot on to the character we have seen on screens for the past decade.

His unique little arms are also nicely built to offer the same range of movement and comically short reach, whilst the general shaping of his head and placement of the various gizmos across his face immediately bring the little guy to life in front of you.

Ultimately, Chopper is no Artoo and will struggle to compete with the complete experience that 75379 R2-D2 offers just simply for where the character stands in wider Star Wars lore, but the same value and fun is very much at play here. So too is everything needed to define 75416 Chopper (C1-10P) as a unique and worthwhile addition to the growing collection of droids, even if the price is a little higher for slightly fewer parts – inflation is catching up to the LEGO Group.
