LEGO Twister blows up a storm on Ideas with functional tornado build

An ode to ‘90s disaster film Twister has cracked 10,000 supporters on LEGO Ideas, whipping up a storm with its functional tornado build.

Presented as a diorama akin to last year’s 21350 Jaws, RoyBuilds’ Twister project captures the heart of the 1996 film across a horizontal footprint. A functional tornado pursues storm chasers Bill and Jo Harding in their iconic red pickup, ravaging the ground – which includes a hint of a corn field – and catching a cow in its spiral. There’s also a brick-built version of Dorothy, the crew’s prototype tornado research device, on the back of the truck.

RoyBuilds first submitted the project to LEGO Ideas on April 10, so it’s taken around two and a half months to gather the necessary support to progress to the review stage. The LEGO Ideas board will now consider whether or not to produce this Twister model as an official LEGO set as part of the second 2025 review, the results of which will likely be announced early 2026.

The decision may ultimately come down to the lasting popularity of Twister, given we’d likely be a few years out from the recent sequel Twisters by the time this set hit shelves. Whether director Jan de Bont’s original movie has the staying power of something like Jaws remains to be seen – but the LEGO Group is going all-in on ‘90s franchises across two new contests at the mo, so you never know.
