My LEGO shopping plan for June 1: Plo Koon, a plane and a shell

Just shy of 100 new LEGO sets are launching on June 1, but I’ve only got eyes for one of them (to begin with, anyway). Here’s my shopping strategy for Sunday…

It’s been a little while since I placed an order at LEGO.com. In fact, the last time I purchased any LEGO online wasn’t really a purchase at all: I pre-ordered Siege Encampment in Series 4 of the BrickLink Designer Program back in February. I’ll only pay for that when it ships, so it’s a problem for future me to deal with. (That guy can never catch a break.)

There’s a good reason for my heavily curtailed LEGO spending, mind. My firstborn daughter arrived into this world on April 13, and it turns out babies don’t come cheap. (To clarify: I did not buy my baby.) Money to spend on LEGO, and indeed time to build LEGO, has pretty much evaporated. But I’ve got my sights set on a relatively small, relatively cheap way to get a LEGO fix on June 1.

That’s in 75400 Plo Koon’s Jedi Starfighter Microfighter, a set with a name I’m already tired of typing out, and one that I’ve been eager to pick up since the moment I clocked Will_Crafting's excellent Rebrickable build of Plo Koon’s Jedi Starfighter. The minifigure-scale model combines 75388 Jedi Bob’s Jedi Starfighter (already got that) and 31160 Race Plane (don’t have that) for a build that’s already taken the community by storm.

It’s one I’ll be piecing together as soon as possible, which with a newborn to look after will probably be sometime around 2027, no doubt two weeks before the LEGO Group inevitably debuts its own minifigure-scale Plo Koon’s Jedi Starfighter. (So it goes.) Come Sunday, then, I’ll be popping both 75400 Plo Koon’s Jedi Starfighter Microfighter and 31160 Race Plane into my basket at LEGO.com.

That’s about £26 all in, so the only logical thing to do at that point is find another £25 or so of LEGO to qualify for free delivery. The LEGO Group knows what it’s doing with that £50 minimum spend, and I fall for it every time. But there’s another bonus to be had here, and another motivation for a June 1 purchase: I’ve got a LEGO Insiders reward code for 40787 Spiny Shell to redeem.

Mario Kart’s blue shell was another set I knew I needed to grab the moment I saw it, and thankfully I already had a relatively decent stash of Insiders points to spare – there was no scrambling around for instruction manuals to scan here, sorry Rachael – so I claimed the code as soon as it went live for fear of it running out.

But then I couldn’t find anything I wanted immediately on May 15… or at least anything within budget. 72037 Mario & Standard Kart is a requirement alongside the blue shell, but will have to wait for the day I stop spending my life savings on baby formula, so I’ve got this code burning a hole in my virtual pocket, as I hope beyond hope that the LEGO Group doesn’t run out of copies before Sunday.

If all goes to plan, I’ll pop that code in at checkout and a few days later, Plo Koon, a plane and a shell will all turn up at my door. All I need to do now is decide what else to buy to get my basket up to £50 without going too far past that threshold. Top of the list at the time of writing are 77241 2 Fast 2 Furious Honda S2000 (love that pink) and a keychain, but I’m open to suggestions.
