NBA Rookie of the Year reveals major LEGO Star Wars purchase

When it comes to major LEGO Star Wars purchases, one of the NBA’s biggest star players knows just what to spend his money on.

San Antonio Spurs center Victor Wembanyama is regarded by many as being one of the most promising basketball prospects in a generation. With a listed height of 7’ 4” (2.24 metres), tied with Houston Rockets’ Boban Marjanovic as the tallest active NBA player, ‘Wemby’ was unanimously named 2024 NBA Rookie of the Year and finished second in the 2024 Defensive Player of the Year voting.

In an exclusive feature on the French basketball star, Sports Illustrated has highlighted the 20 year-old player’s many sporting achievements to date, as well as his passion for all things Star Wars. In a podcast interview last year, Wembanyama talked about being a huge fan of a galaxy far, far away, going so far as to select Revenge of the Sith, Attack of the Clones and The Empire Strikes Back as his favourites of the nine saga films.

The article goes on to mention that lucky fans who got to sit down for dinner with Wembanyama the night before the NBA Draft in 2023 not only discovered just how likable a person the player is, but also what the young superstar’s first major purchase with his multi-million dollar rookie contract would be.

Instead of a flashy sports car or expensive jewellery, Wembanyama said he wanted 75192 Millennium Falcon, with the 7,541-piece set currently retailing for £734.99 / $849.99 / €849.99. The largest and most expensive brick-built version of the fastest hunk of junk in the galaxy to date, the UCS model measures over 84cm in length and includes seven minifigures.

"I thought to myself, 'Wow. The Millennium (Falcon)?,'’’ said Vice President of NBA Experiences Evan Bruno to Sports Illustrated. "I mean... then you realize, he's just a kid. You realize that at the end of the day, he's a kid at heart."

"He's a really down-to-Earth, humble kid who wants success and has seen success early," Bruno said. "For him to come into the league and not only live up to the hype, but exceed the hype has been incredible. He's been nothing short of spectacular as a superstar both on and off-the-court."

Wembanyama reportedly earned $12.1 million in his rookie year and is set to make at least $12.7 million next season, which would certainly be enough for the NBA star player to purchase plenty more massive LEGO Star Wars sets.
