The LEGO Group has confirmed the opening date for Northern Ireland’s first LEGO Store, along with a special guest for the ribbon-cutting ceremony.
The 165-square-metre store at Victoria Square in Belfast will open to the public on August 28 at 9am, complete with all the usual hallmarks of a LEGO Store, including the Pick a Brick wall, Build-a-Minifigure tower and an endless stream of sets to buy. Vice President of Marketing LEGO Retail Shweta Munshi will be in attendance, joined by Northern Irish boy Dáithí Mac Gabhann.
The youngster is best known for inspiring ‘Dáithí’s Law’, or the Organ and Tissue Donation (Deemed Consent) legislation, which came into effect in 2023 and means most adults in Northern Ireland are now automatically considered organ donors after death. It’s the same opt-out system that was already in place across the rest of the UK, and has since seen an increase in the number of donors in Northern Ireland.
Dáithí has been on the waiting list for a heart transplant since 2018, and his father Máirtín Mac Gabhann spearheaded a campaign to pass the new legislation. “I hope families will have a conversation now and consider joining the register regardless of age,” Máirtín told the BBC last year. “It might seem like a lot to ask, but with organ donation being the last resort and the only option for Dáithí, it’s all we can ask.”
If you’d like to see Dáithí cutting the ribbon on Northern Ireland’s first LEGO Store, head down to Victoria Square on the morning of August 28. LEGO Stores typically have a couple of exclusive promos up for grabs across their opening weekend, such as printed tiles and LEGO Brand Store sets (usually available with qualifying purchases).
"After a thorough search, we have found the perfect site in Victoria Square, Belfast,” Munshi said of the new store. “In the heart of the city, the new store will allow builders of all ages to be inspired by the endless play opportunities the LEGO Group has to offer. This store will be a top retail destination for product launches and events, while acting as a hub for our LEGO community and new builders alike.”
